The Queen's Underwear

April 24, 2011 Sarah Alderson
The Queen all dressed up
The Queen all dressed up

The event of the year (apparently) is happening next week - there is going to be a Royal wedding. Lots of people are organising events to celebrate and everywhere you look there are things to buy with the happy couple on. I am not particularly a Royalist, and I am not against Royalty either. I do however have a soft spot for our Queen. I think she is a great ambassador for our country and always conducts herself with dignity. She has been around much longer than any of our prime ministers and probably knows a lot more about how the world works than they do too. So when Baa Ram Ewe (my LYS) decided to knit a Royal Wedding for a window display I jumped at the chance to knit the Queen. The pattern was not my favourite - too many little bits to sew up - but I think she looks great, very regal!

The trouble is, the pattern gives her a hat, shoes, handbag, dress and coat - but no underwear! Shock, horror - how can they let the Queen go commando? Most undignified. I can imagine that One is not amused.

I therefore decided to knit the Queen some matching (of course) undies to go with her outfit. The question that bothered me though was what type of underwear would the Queen wear? I cannot imagine her in a thong (in fact I really would not like to imagine it at all) - far too uncomfortable. I expect she wears quite comfortable underwear, but with a bit of spice. I decided to knit her some black lacy bra and knickers - practical but with a little bit of minx.

Quite fetching!

First patterns now available

Hurdle-iPhone-FI.jpg

I have uploaded my first two designs to this site. The first is an iPhone cozy done in a textured hurdle stitch. It was originally published on Ravelry in March 2011 and has been made by a couple of people already. I have made quite a few of these now. They are very simple to knit and look great and are functional too. I have given a few away as presents and they have been well received (and used!). The pattern was inspired by some left over yarn from a fingerless mittens project and the need for a iTouch cozy for the same person. I like the look of textured knits, they are fun to knit and are good for cozy's as they tend to be thicker and so more protective.

The second pattern is for a crochet phone cozy, but for a slimmer phone (such as a Nokia). This pattern was inspired and commissioned by my step-dad. He asked for a pig phone cozy for father's day a few years ago. I think he likes the design as it has been through the wash several times (note - wobbly eyes do not do well in washing machines!).

Both patterns are available to download for free. You can find them by clicking on designs on the menu bar.

I hope you enjoy making them as much as I have done!
